Help the Homeless: One Step at a Time

By Erin Hall, Volunteer Program Intern | June 29, 2012

One in five D.C. residents currently lives in poverty making it the 3rd highest poverty rate in the nation. The amount of homeless families is continuing to grow due to the economic crisis and job loss in the United States. For 25 years, Martha’s Table has worked with the Help the Homeless program to achieve a common goal: break the cycle of poverty..

On Saturday, July 21st at 2:00 PM, Martha’s Table will host a mini-walk at Meridian Hill Park to raise money through the Help the Homeless program.  It only takes one individual and one registration to help us work towards our goal of raising $2,500 for this mini-walk and recruiting a total of 4,000 walkers before November. Registration fees are $20 for ages 25 and younger and $30 for adult walkers. Can’t make it that day to the walk? Become a virtual walker! For $35, you can virtually participate in our mini-walk without having to be there. Every walker counts, even if you walk with your mouse. With the recruitment of over 4,000 walkers, Martha’s Table will receive a grant for $50,000! This would help Martha’s Table continue to provide the quality food, nutrition, clothing and educational programs to the community.  Come out to the Help the Homeless Walk July 21st and recognize the true impact you could have on your community. To register, go to www.hthwalks.org and select Martha’s Table as the beneficiary.
